The School of Communication Studies offers several scholarships for students who display exceptional skill and work ethic.  Each scholarship is unique in its background and purpose.  View scholarship details and apply below.


Charles J McClung Prize Fund

This prize is awarded to participants in the Charles J. McClung Speech Contest, the largest public speaking contest in the Southeast.  The contest takes place semi-annually, in the spring and fall, featuring unique themes every year.

Deadline: TBA

Amount:  

  • 1st place  - $150
  • 2nd place - $100
  • 3rd place  - $75
  • 4th place  - $50
  • 5th place  - $50

Criteria: Communication studies major or enrolled in Communication Studies 210

To Apply: Enter the Charles J. McClung Speech Contest.  Check www.cci.utk.edu for information when it becomes available.

Michael Kenneth Hamrick Scholarship

The Michael Kenneth Hamrick Scholarship was created in 2008 by the parents of alumni Michael Hamrick to honor his memory. Michael passed away suddenly in 2008.

Deadline: February 1st, each year

Amount: $100 - $150 per semester (endowed)

Criteria: Junior or senior communication studies major

Maria Felt/William Haas Scholarship

The Maria Felt/William Haas Scholarship was created in 2014 by faculty and staff of the School of Communication Studies on behalf of the passing of Dr. John Haas’s parents.  Dr. Haas is Director and Associate Professor at the School of Communication Studies.

Deadline: February 1st, each year

Amount: This scholarship is not endowed at this time, so no scholarships can be awarded until the fund reaches $25,000.

Nathan Boals Memorial Scholarship

The Nathan Boals Memorial Scholarship was created in 2007 by the parents of former student Nathan Boals to honor his memory.  Nathan passed away while studying abroad in Paris.

Deadline: February 1st, each year

Amount: $100 - $150 per semester (endowed)

Criteria: Junior or senior communication studies major
