COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:
The purpose of this classification is to provide writing and editing assistance for the Community Relations Division within the Knox County Health Department.  Duties include, but are not limited to: preparing news releases or written communications; writing daily web stories and other content to ensure web-site is regularly updated; coordinating and implementing social media outreach and education; and performing additional duties as assigned by the Community Relations Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned. Writes and edits news releases, newsletters, brochures, proclamations, etc. as needed. Proactively seeks feature stories for release of positive activities ongoing within the health department. Writes talking points and speeches as needed. Creates invitations, flyers, brochures and other minor publications and produces slide shows as needed. Conducts interviews in the process of gathering information for news and web stories. Edits newsletters, correspondence and other written materials as needed. Creates invitations, flyers, brochures and other publications when graphic artist is unavailable. Assists Community Relations Director in planning, organizing and implementing the special events and promotions as appropriate.


ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
:
Responds to and reports immediately if called upon by local regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Department of Health.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree required in Communications, Journalism or related field; with three (3) to five (5) years’ experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, knowledge, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.  This position requires a broad knowledge base, extensive experience, demonstrated ability to relate to people and an excellent knowledge of systems theory.  Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, such as a computer, printer, telephone, copier, calculator, document binder, overhead/pc projector, VCR and monitor, etc.  Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.  Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for sedentary work.

$36,068.18
